The original is an escape-room game for Windows, macOS and Linux, distributed name-your-own-price on itch.io. You are locked in a room with a yandere cat-girl NPC whose dialogue runs on a language model, and you win by convincing her to unlock the door or by working out hidden clues. Language support covers Chinese, Japanese, English and Spanish, with microphone input listed for German, French and Russian.
The catch that surprises almost everyone: the store page states an OpenAI API key is required to play, with Azure Speech Service listed for the voice layer. The developer states plainly that they earn nothing from OpenAI or Azure, and that a brand-new OpenAI account’s starter credit — around five dollars — covers ten or more rounds. This is a real game whose conversation engine bills you at cost, separately from the purchase.
AI2U: the Steam successor
The same studio promotes AI2U: With You ’Til The End as a Steam Early Access expansion of the concept — more scenarios, more NPCs, the same talk-your-way-through design. They also run a Discord where their AI characters can be chatted with free, which is a genuinely useful zero-cost way to sample the writing quality before downloading anything.
Early Access means the usual caveats: content volume and stability change between patches, and reviews from launch week may describe a different build than today’s.
Epic’s free dating sim
Epic Games Store lists “AI Girlfriend: Dating Sim” as download-and-play-for-free. A storefront listing is thinner evidence than a store page with detailed requirements, so treat it as a lead to inspect: check the listing’s system requirements, in-app purchase disclosure and recent reviews before installing.
A free-to-install game can still contain paid layers. The store page, not the price tag, tells you where they are.
